Why You Struggle with Comprehension—and How to Overcome it

A glowing light bulb surrounded by wooden question marks on a dark surface.

Why students who study very hard still struggle to understand what they hear and read?

You don’t have a studying problem. You have a "meaning" problem.

  • Do you study hard, know vocabulary, grammar rules, yet  struggle to understand what you read and hear?

  • Do you find yourself catching individual words and guessing the meaning based on sounds that seem familiar?

  • Do you often realize your guess was wrong, causing you to miss the core of the message?

Over nearly 20 years of teaching Persian, I’ve noticed a common pattern.

  • Those who struggled with comprehension focus on isolated words rather than the overall meaning of a sentence or a passage.

  • Because of this, they often guess incorrectly based on similar-sounding words.
  • When this happens, the true message of the conversation is lost.

  • They missed the whole message.

Why This Happens in Listening

  •  Listening in a foreign language is a completely different mental process than native listening.

  • Listening in another language  is a skill that must be developed through knowing listening strategies and guided practices.

  • Knowing words and studying are not enough to understand what you hear, read, and communicate  accurately.

  •  Persian sentence structure is different from many other languages.

  • If you focus only on isolated words, without understanding structure, connection, and patterns reading comprehension becomes difficult.

Escape the "Guessing Trap"

To overcome the habit of the "guessing trap,"

  • Stop focusing on individual words.

  • Instead, focuse on the contex clues and recognizing patterns—the true bridge to accurate understanding.

At LingoCul, we help you master your listening and reading skills so you fully comprehend what you read and listen,  communicate with confidence.

Instead of piece-mailing words and sentences together, you will learn to see the entire bridge of meaning.
